(Staff) Member Spotlight – Joey Frazier
Joey (rt) and Lukas Koepke take a break during a recent workout.
If you don’t believe in karma, then you haven’t heard about Joey Frazier. He walked through the doors of PrimeTime Fitness at just the right time and so far has been a great fit!
Originally from North Wilkesboro, NC, Joey has moved around quite a bit. After 25 years in Charlotte, then making stops in Seattle, Charleston, and Annapolis, he and his wife have finally returned to Charleston. Joey has a background in sports performance and owned his own sports training facility, Dynamic Balance Sports, in Charlotte. But that doesn’t mean he only trains athletes – Joey also works with clients on improving their functional, everyday movement patterns.
Joey’s own interest in fitness began when he was heavily involved in football and basketball. Loving sports, and hating to lose, Joey often hit the gym. He now specializes in sports performance, and even believes “there is at least a little bit of athlete in all of us.” Unlike in the past, when he worked out to win in his sport, Joey’s lifestyle now is such that working out is a given and just a regular part of his day. His favorite forms of exercise are resistance training and plyometrics. For cardio, he prefers interval training (see our section on cardiovascular training!). He holds a certification in Personal Training through the International Sports Science Association and is CPR certified.
When Joey came to PrimeTime, he was pleased to find just what he was looking for – a place where he could get to know the members and work closely with his clients. He enjoys the friendly atmosphere which he finds intimate yet professional.
When he’s not in the gym, you might find Joey enjoying the local music scene, restaurant hopping (he used to be a sommelier in the food and beverage industry), or hanging out at the beach with his dogs – a sheltie, Deuce, and a rescue, Ginger (Frosty the cat prefers to stay at home). His wife, Peggy, VP of Talent Acquisition at Blackbaud, sometimes even tags along! And if you ever notice his name absent on the Trainer Availability e-mails, it might be because he ventures up to North Wilkesboro, NC every now and then to help his dad on his farm.
Joey has a few words of wisdom to offer to us all. As Jim Valvano once said, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”
Well said, Joey! And welcome to the PrimeTime Team! We’re so glad to have you!
Why You Should Care about Cardio
As trainers, we see it all the time. Gym members forego time on the treadmill in favor of moving some metal around in the weight room. Some people “get bored” on the elliptical – lifting weights is so much more interesting. Others “can’t stand” indoor cycling and opt instead for bicep curls and squats. However, endurance training is important for aerobic stamina and cardiovascular health. Whether you choose to do your cardio component indoors or out, check out this article to learn why cardio training is so important, and how to take a more effective approach.
If you are looking for non-dairy, non-fat, and gluten-free desserts to enjoy during warmer weather, this one is for you! And did we mention it is oh-so-easy?!
One banana, sliced
One tsp of sugar-free hot chocolate mix
Optional: one tsp or less of all-natural peanut butter
Freeze the banana slices for two to three hours.
Combine frozen banana with remaining ingredients in a blender; blend until smooth.
If desired, garnish with a sprinkle of extra hot chocolate mix, chocolate shavings, or a dash of cinnamon.
Makes two servings of creamy, dreamy, banana-chocolate “soft serve ice cream!” Enjoy!
Two National Days to “Celebrate” this Month! April 9 – National Alcohol Screening DayNational Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) is an outreach, education, and screening initiative that raises awareness about harmful and dependent drinking behaviors and connects individuals who are at risk with treatment options. NASD is held annually on Thursday of the first full week of April. Thousands of colleges, community-based organizations, and military installations provide the program to the public each year. It’s possible to have a problem with alcohol without having an alcohol problem. If you are concerned about your drinking patterns, take time on this day to complete a short anonymous online screening. Click here to begin!
April 23 – National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work(out) Day According to the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work website, the program goes beyond “shadowing” an adult. “Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives does during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, and providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success.”Here at PrimeTime Fitness we invite you to go one step further, and bring your kids with you to workout. Allowing your daughters and sons – no matter what their ages – to experience your healthy lifestyle right along with you is more than a learning opportunity; it gives you quality time together doing something active and fun.So on the fourth Thursday of the month, take your daughters and sons to work, and then bring them to the gym to workout!
There is so much to do this month. Check out the sites of some of our favorite groups for a complete listing of all activities:
